I’m a proud Hoosier who began my journey at Indiana University, where I earned my undergraduate degree, before moving to North Carolina for graduate studies in French and Spanish at UNC-Chapel Hill. I spent many fulfilling years teaching these languages, but my most important role has always been being a mother to my five boys. Raising them was an action-packed adventure, especially since they all attended the high school where I taught—there was no escaping Mom! After retiring from teaching, I turned my passion for baking into “Kathleen’s Perfect Pies,” a business I dedicated to my mother, who taught me the secret to a perfect pie crust.
She always said, “There’s no good pie without a good crust,” and I couldn’t agree more. Beyond baking, I’ve always been passionate about music, languages, and travel. I’ve studied Portuguese, German, and Italian, written songs in French, and traveled both across the U.S. and abroad. Sports have also been a big part of my life—from my high school cheerleading days to cheering (loudly!) at my sons’ and grandchildren’s games. I believe in living life with enthusiasm and positivity.
Having something to look forward to, whether it’s a small treat like dessert or a bigger goal like a trip, keeps me motivated. I also live by the Golden Rule and try to approach every day with kindness, appreciation, and cheerfulness—after all, my mother always reminded me that it takes more muscles to frown than to smile! I’m a firm believer in lifelong learning and trying new things because staying curious and engaged keeps life exciting. Whether I’m baking, writing, or exploring something new, I try to approach life with energy and joy.
So far, my children’s books have centered on holidays, a theme that resonates deeply with me. Holidays are rich with family traditions, fond memories, and shared joy. While I’ve written about Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, Valentine’s Day, and Halloween, I’m now working on a Fourth of July story. Beyond holidays, I have exciting ideas for stories on other topics and can’t wait to bring them to life—stay tuned!
